A word of advice from one of the "older" janitors- there are some posts you don't touch, and here's an example.

Posts whining about YOU. Yeah, it sucks...but guess what? A post whining about the "nazi janitors" that doesn't magically disappear is a blessing. It sticks out like a sore thumb saying "SUP, I HAVEN'T BEEN DELETED, LOOKIT ME!", and if it was a tripcode user- makes them look like a whining idiot.

This might be a nice place to talk about what you've learned janitoring your respective boards. Just keep in mind, a lot of boards are very different, so qualify your comments well, and when reading what fellow janitors say, it may be very contextual. As foone and I were talking about on IRC just now, /r and /o are janitored in VERY different ways :-)

Cheers, all. PS:Try to find a "whining" related image for your post for all of us to use (posting anonymously of course :-) in response to idiots whining about us.

I haven't had any real complaints. Got an odd response the other day though. Someone posted a RS to something I wouldn't mind having, so I thought I'd be nice, and request a torrent with a hint of 'rules etc' instead of just killing it. The next user replied.

"You're better off reporting it and going on your way until the janitors learn to work effeciently enough." Or something along those lines.

I'm not sure exactly what the hell that means, but it's the first reference I've seen, so I can't be too bad heh.

I'm noticing more posts going off on tangents recently though. I might start being slightly more nazi'ish if posts start getting closer to /b grade material (I think some might consider some posts there already.)

I learned that if I am not destroying the thread entirely on /c/, it is helpful to explain what the user did wrong in an anonymous, ambiguous way (so that they don't think it is the janitor posting). A simple phrase like "males aren't allowed here." educates everybody but does not risk blowing my cover. It just makes me sound like some guy who knows the rules. I think it works. Most people on /c/ know what they are doing and there are not very many repeat offenders from what I can tell.
    >> Anonymous 12/22/06(Fri)12:59 No.601
Most of the drama on /cgl/ is from the users, not from janitors removing threads and pictures. Judging from the amount of troll posting on /cgl/ I doubt anyone will miss any thread...unless it's yet another Adella one.

Here's a friendly protip on the subject, despite the fact that no one has posted in this thread for a few days now.

Users complain when you delete threads. Users complain when you don't delete threads. The fact that they don't see "User was banned for this post" very often signifies to them that no one's doing their job. When they do see it, they'll bitch about how such and such wasn't fair for whatever bullshit reason, and then the banned party will come back to taunt, probably with something like "lol proxies".

Is there any good way to work around this? No, not really. Should you give a shit? No, not at all. If someone wants to bitch about the job you're doing, feel free to delete any offensive images and leave the posts. The other users will descend upon the whiners like vultures upon a fresh, possibly barely living carcass. As long as you take care of the rules part, you can leave the wolves to the wolves, and in some cases play them off each other in entertaining new ways.

Just live by the motto: "Let's 4chan!"
    >> Anonymous 12/30/06(Sat)01:12 No.615
Keeping a good sense of humor seems to help a lot, in my experience. If I see people bitching about something I've done, as long as I know I haven't made a horrible mistake, I usually laugh about it. (though maybe that's the asshole in me coming out, too, I don't know)

In any case, taking things too seriously seems to be a downfall here. If you find yourself starting to get really serious about everything, it might be good to take a short break until you relax a bit.

Seriously. Every other day, I can't connect because of dead servers. My IRC client just sits there and tries to connect until I give up and quit it. Meanwhile, I can connect to 2-3 other networks just fine...

Recently I've gotten various errors from timeouts to 'server full.'

I tend to idle alright, maybe a disconnect a day. But my aim goes as well so that's probably my pos router.

I get the same sort of problem, some days it just won't log-in, or it'll disconnect too much and eventually exit out of itself.
    >> Anonymous 12/11/06(Mon)13:04 No.559
I get that too, although sometimes I'll wait long enough, take a shower, etc. and come back to it finally getting its shit together. I'm not sure if it's me or the network, but many other networks work perfectly fine so..

    18 KB /i/ Rules Anonymous ## Mod 11/22/06(Wed)16:14 No.477   [Reply]
First off, thanks again to Coda for the awesome new oekaki features on /i/. I believe everyone has taken to them really well. The global announcement has turned it into /b/ paint right now. :)

Because the upgrade also changes the nature of /i/, I was wondering if perhaps this might affect the rules as well. There have been some obviously non-oekaki pics posted, when I'm assuming this function is for when the upload fails.

I'm aware it's still early days, so if it's okay I might put up some ideas later on as to how the new system might be detrimental to /i/ without certain guidelines. Thanks :)
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 11/26/06(Sun)13:00 No.486
There hasn't been any problems with the new unoffical loli rule on /i/, but what about furry? There are one or two /i/ posters who are trying to get furry porn threads going. Would these stay as with the loli 'rule', or be deleted as furry outside /b/?
    >> Anonymous ## Manager 11/30/06(Thu)14:07 No.504
this has already been addressed in the channel but I figured I'd mention it here too:

furry stuff is still not allowed on /i/ or anywhere else besides /b/
    >> /i/ image size limits Anonymous ## Mod 12/08/06(Fri)23:44 No.553
There's been some discussion regarding some changes to the /i/ uploads. There appears to be some confusion regarding whether it's a file size limit of 100kb, or an image size limit of 300x300 pixels. I tried it out and it appears to be the latter.

To prevent any people who haven't screencapped their work, or even begun one witht the new system, can we make some kind of notice as to this change? I assume it's for bandwidth and such, which is cool, but it might be an idea to give the board a heads up?
    >> Anonymous ## Admin 12/10/06(Sun)04:12 No.554
I'm pretty sure this is a bug, and I've already told coda about it. It's up to him to fix though!

56 KB "Cute" death Anonymous ## Janitor 11/30/06(Thu)14:48 No.505   [Reply]
Every once in a while a "cute dead girl" thread pops up on /c/. As the name implies, pictures of dead girls are posted. I know anything extremely bloody is guro and therefore not worksafe, but a lot of the images are "tasteful", where the girls depicted are not mutilated and such. Are these threads not worksafe simply because they depict death? They seem to get an equal amount of sages and bumps, so I am not even sure what /c/'s opinion is. What's yours?
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 12/01/06(Fri)02:47 No.507
I don't see why death isn't work safe.
    >> Anonymous 12/01/06(Fri)02:49 No.509
I only browse /c/ occasionally, but I think it is solidly outside the realm of "cute."

    Death is not cute.
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 12/01/06(Fri)02:54 No.511

Well that's disputeable. Can someone post the pictures in question so we can further determine the circumstances?
    >> Anonymous ## Janitor 12/01/06(Fri)18:35 No.523
Sorry, I never save the pictures. (I agree with Unnes about death's lack of cuteness) The next time a thread pops up I'll post some here. But like I said, the pictures are tame for 4chan's standards. Most of the time it is a girl with her eyes closed and her wrist bleeding, or a girl hanging from a rope (but not all purple and bulgy-eyed).

Consider this scenario: if you were looking at /c/ at work (let's hope nobody really does) and a passerby saw one of these threads, they would think you were a fucking weirdo, regardless of how "tasteful" the art itself is. I don't think it is good for the board.
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 12/02/06(Sat)01:01 No.526

You make a good point, I retract my argument.

WHUT CAMRA DO I BY? Anonymous 11/16/06(Thu)15:30 No.452   [Reply]
theres currently several "what slr/compact should i buy" threads on /p/. its beyond a joke. they do allways spark discussion, so i'm reluctant to delete them.
can i get a clarification, or might i even suggest a new rule, reffering such discussion to /g/?
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 11/16/06(Thu)17:54 No.454
As another janitor on /p/, I would have to say that slr/compact threads would be hard to remove from the board. It is important to be able to talk about performance of cameras as they are used to produce photographs. However, these are cyclical. They start up around November/December for the holiday season and quickly end shortly after. Another peak time would be around May or June as well.

Though I agree that it is almost ridiculous that there are probably 4 threads on the first page about gear in general, they shouldn't be deleted. Even /p/ gets bored of gear threads and start to sage them. About forwarding them to /g/, I don't think that there should be any conscious campaign to do so. Camera threads do pop up in /g/ but, I think they are pretty much valid in both boards.
    >> Anonymous 11/21/06(Tue)11:47 No.475
The problem is that the gear threads appear almost constantly. Often times there will be threads for the same damn camera on different pages...usually an XTi, though at one point someone was (clearly) astroturfing the Sony SLR.

Anything that keeps /p from turning into the absolute shithole that /g is, is more than welcome.

/o used to have a problem with "help my car broke" and "I have $6k, what should I buy" threads. Deleting them one or twice resulted in people then posting "why haven't the mods deleted this yet? Arrg!" :-)

For the 2 users that whine, 100 will sigh a great sigh of relief. Seriously, when someone posts a picture of a Rebel XTi "borrowed" from Amazon...that's not /p material to me. 99% of what follows are imageless flaming posts. That can be done on the discussion board.

Here's a shocking idea...on each board's main page and reply page, link to the relevant discussion board.
    >> Anonymous 11/23/06(Thu)06:09 No.483

I want new rules for /p/ and a sticky, with stuff like links to camera review pages. i'm also getting sick of all the 350D/400D and D50/70/75/80 threads.

moving them to /g/ isn't smart, cause /g/ will say: go to /p/ for that.

threads about older film cameras are OK on the other hand, IMO. they're less frequent and more interesting. there's plenty of info on the Canon/Nikon low-end DSLR series
    >> Anonymous 11/30/06(Thu)00:56 No.500

Also, please put in the sticky a link to ...because when /p isn't asking equipment questions, they're asking basic photography questions.

I do kind of agree about the film camera threads, though some idiot usually posts about film being better than digital.
    >> Anonymous ## Manager 11/30/06(Thu)14:05 No.503
Camera discussion is not going to be moved to /g/ because thats a horrible idea and /g/ already has a no tech help rule. If things like this are actually a problem we should discuss a rule change in irc.

I like the idea for a /rs/. It is a very effective way to transfer files after all. Why not encourage it?
    >> Anonymous ## Janitor 11/26/06(Sun)22:09 No.490
I know it's been suggested before...actually I think it was suggested a long time ago but I'm not sure exactly what all the arguments against it were. Probably need a few new janitors just to keep it in line though.
    >> Anonymous 11/27/06(Mon)05:33 No.492
I'm for it too, and not only cause I run rapidsearch :)

As far as boards go, it'd be about the lowest bandwidth usage. Right there next to /t/, which can't be much.
It'd also cut down on the rapidshare dumps in other boards, as the people whoring their collectors accounts would have somewhere non-destructive to do it in.
    >> Anonymous ## Janitor 11/27/06(Mon)14:30 No.494
I do kind of wonder how well rules could be upkept though. With all boards flooding a /rs itd be pretty chaotic. The content seems like itd vary a lot in quality too...the extra steps in starting a torrent tends to keep some dips from posting worthless crap.
    >> Anonymous 11/30/06(Thu)10:57 No.502
I agree, a /rs/ would be an excellent idea. As long as it didn't end up being like /r/, which is in the realm of possibility.

    /g/ suggestion threads Anonymous 11/28/06(Tue)19:00 No.495   [Reply]
are threads asking for suggestions support or not?
    >> Anonymous ## Mod 11/28/06(Tue)21:14 No.496
Depends on suggestions for what. Even if it's a question about say mp3 players, I would consider that support because it's helping the poster make some sort of purchase. I don't think that sort of stuff should be allowed in /g/ because it doesn't really add anything. An exception would be talk of a new mp3 player using some new tech or design methodology and comparing it to current standards.

However, suggestion threads are fairly innoculous, so it's more on a case by case thing, but I would personally consider them support.
    >> Anonymous 11/29/06(Wed)07:03 No.497
Well, I think it was said before, but it may not be the accepted that support threads are like "Spyware, what I do?" "Adaware logs" "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I WANT THESE MOTHERFUCKING VIRUSES OFF THIS MOTHERFUCKING COMPUTER" "My computer won't see my new printer". Mostly threads talking about products will talk about what's good and bad, and that itself is support, but not the type that is trying to be stopped from being posted.

    61 KB Rules for /po/ Anonymous 11/27/06(Mon)01:28 No.491   [Reply]
I've been overlooking /po/ for quite a while, and i'm very happy with the direction it's been going. There are lots of good posts, but maybe a litte too many requests.

The thing that has been bothering me, and appearently the admins, is that there hasn't really been anything to delete for a while. But now i'm beginning to think i might be looking for the wrong things.

So far i've been deleting things that are downright destructive, such as obvious /b/-threads. But should i delete single replies to posts that don't add anything to the post as well? Posts that aren't really offending but don't really add anything either?

    Examples: >>>/po/28555.html#q28712 (a /b/ meme)
After thinking about it, i think i would delete these. Is that right?

Really unsure about these. They don't really do any harm, and as long as there aren't too many such posts, they don't clutter too much either.
    >> Anonymous 11/27/06(Mon)09:04 No.493
There isn't anything wrong with those posts. You can't expect every post to be a nugget of wisdom. Even retarded posts by retarded people shouldn't be deleted unless it is offensive, breaks a rule, or will cause a thread to spiral into an internet fight.
